‘KHIÊN’ LÀ MỘT TỪ GỐC CHĂM
"Khiên" is a word of Cham origin
“Khiên” là danh từ chỉ vật dùng để che đỡ cho tên, gươm, giáo khỏi trúng người trong chiến trận thời xưa, thường đan bằng mây, hình giống cái chảo. Tuy phổ biến là vậy nhưng ít ai biết rằng từ “khiên" này là một từ gốc Chăm.
"Khiên" (A shield) is a noun that refers to an object used to protect arrows, swords, and spears from hitting people in ancient battles, often woven from rattan, shaped like a pan. Although so popular, few people know that the word "shield" is a word of Cham origin.
Thực ra, trước đây người Việt gọi cái lá chắn trong chiến đấu là cái "mộc", rút gọn từ "mộc bài" (木牌) nghĩa là “lá chắn bằng gỗ”. Về sau, do sự giao thoa văn hóa với người Chăm mà dân ta đã chuyển sang gọi vật dụng này là “khiên", biến âm của “khil” trong tiếng Chăm.
In fact, in the past, the Vietnamese called Khiên in battle the "Mộc", shortening the word "Mộc bài" (木牌) which means "wooden shield". Later, due to the cultural interference with the Cham people, our people switched to calling this item "Khiên", the transliteration of "khil" in Cham language.
Vào đầu thế kỉ XVII, Alexandre vẫn chưa ghi nhận sự xuất hiện của từ “khiên” trong từ điển Việt-Bồ-La. Tuy nhiên, đến thế kỉ XIX, có một tác phẩm chữ Nôm đã sử dụng từ “khiên” (牽) để gọi cái lá chắn bằng gỗ.
At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Alexander had not yet recorded the appearance of the word "Khiên" in the Vietnamese-Portuguese dictionary. However, in the 19th century, there was a written Nom script that used the word "khiên" (牽) to refer to a wooden shield.
Như vậy ta có thể thấy từ “khiên" được mượn trong giai đoạn Champa là lãnh thổ tự trị dưới sự bảo hộ của các chúa Nguyễn, tên hành chính chữ Nho là "Thuận Thành trấn" 順城鎮 tức là trấn Thuận Thành, nay là vùng thuộc 2 tỉnh Ninh Thuận và Bình Thuận.
So, we can see that the word "khiên" was borrowed during the Champa period as an autonomous territory under the protection of the Nguyen lords, the administrative name of the Confucian word is "Thuan Thanh town" 順城鎮 ie Thuan Thanh town, now is a region belonging to two provinces of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan.
Tóm lại, “khiên" là một từ gốc chăm, phiên âm của “khil”.
In short, "Khiên" is a word of Cham origin, transliterated from “khil”.
