Write an essay (150 - 300 words) about this topic:
The number of people interested in cosmetic surgery is increasing in order to improve their physical appearance. Why do people do operations to change the way they look? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
It is a fact that more and more people commit cosmetic surgery for three main causes in terms of appearance, advertisement effect, and body shaming. In my opinion, this operation brings more negative effects rather than positive ones.
First of all, there are three causes provoking people to have cosmetic surgery. First and foremost, humans, especially women, want to be more good-looking and beautiful. They sometimes compare themselves to others and find a reason to take this surgery. Second, advertisement on media sets a model image of a man or a woman, which performs an ideology of beauty. For example, a man should be tall and a woman should be white. Finally, body shaming plays an important role. Many people commit cosmetic surgery since they are hated and isolated because of their appearance.
In my perspective, this operation is a negative development because it may have an effect on both the physical and mental health of people and increase body-shaming ideas. There are millions of failed cosmetic surgeries reported and many people are suffering from depression after that. What’s more, the idea of body shaming is about to increase and those who deny this surgery to become better-looking are considered weird and awkward.
In conclusion, there are many reasons for this surgery and I myself disagree with it. People should learn to accept their genuine bodies and love themselves regardless of their body, their face or skin.
As the 21st century unfolds, plastic surgery has been considered the elixir of improving physical appearance. The explanation for this trend takes root from the feudal norms and I think it is a setback for women and our society.
In fact, centuries ago, humans all have highly appreciated beauty. Our ancestors used to apply strict standards for the beauty of women in order to increase women’s dependence such as belly buckle in Europe, bound feet in China, etc. Nowadays, the influence of technology on commerce can explain the rising demand for cosmetic surgery to meet those standards. Commercial companies are understanding customers who taste through the collecting and processing of user information using AI, thereby launching marketing campaigns to drive customers to buy their luxury service. Furthermore, technological advances are downing the cost of cosmetic surgeries, buying middle-income customers opportunities to do operations to change the appearance they want. This partly contributes to the increase of people using cosmetic surgery.
On the other hand, this trend also leads to negative impacts on both individuals and society. On the individual level, cosmetic surgery directly damages the health conditions of those who use these services. For example, as people implant silicone breasts into their bodies in order to improve their measurements, this might turn on natural defense mechanisms, causing chronic pains or even triggering anaphylaxis accompanied by cytokine storms that could kill the user. On the social level, increasing demand for cosmetic surgery demeans women. This trend underestimates internal beauty such as intelligence, kindness, and altruism. Hence, women and girls might be forced to focus on their appearance for their careers and education
In conclusion, both the feudal standards in the past and the development of technology significantly lead to the increasing demand for cosmetic surgery and I am generally pessimistic about the future it would bring about.
