The current trend in education is to move away from traditional exams and instead have continuous assessment over the school year. What do you think of this trend?

Nowadays people have different views on how student’s knowledge and capacity should be evaluated. Many educators usually tend to choose prolonged assessment through the school year in many countries instead of traditional examinations. I believe that this trend has both positive and negative sides.

At first, it is clear that steady assessment helps constantly demonstrate a student’s level of knowledge. Firstly, students have mental ability and diligent work to prove some consistent results, make some gradual improvement as well as understand their proficiencies and knowledge gaps-remediate weaknesses through strengths in a relaxed manner, comparing to formal examinations. Unceasing assessment, besides, helps a student to practically perform all theories and checks students’ creative ability in fun and creative way. Steady assessment seems to be a fair method; however, the method does not exactly reflect students’ capacity. For instance, students can download vast amounts of documentary, making their teachers get trouble in determining their work. Thus, unceasing assessment is sometimes argued the poor measure.

Nevertheless, formal examinations are much more reasonable in judging a student’s competence during the semester. The examination is usually held under strict invigilation can conclusively check a student’s knowledge during the school year. However, this system sometimes generates phobia among students when they are forced to study an extensive syllabus and are only conducted at the end of the term. In such circumstances, students may not perform to the best of their potential as well as his overall grades may be affected, which is a drawback of this type of assessment.

Overall, I can clearly come to conclusion that although continuous criterion helps educators get many advantages in appraising students as well as students have chances to perform their ability, this trend has some its drawbacks.
