Write an essay (150 - 300 words) about this topic:
To what extent is the use of animals in scientific research acceptable? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Animal experiment has long been a globally controversial issue, causing a large number of contradictory opinions. Some people strongly protest the idea of animal testing, regarding it as an inhumane, cruel and intolerable activity. On the other hand, others assume that laboratory animals perform a great service to ensure the long-lasting survival of human beings.
Since the living environment of lab animals is completely artificial, it is evident that they are kept in captivity, being fed with hazardous substances only for experimentation purpose. If a person visits one medical laboratory, he can immediately notice masses of guinea pigs being given heart-attack or electric shock or lethally poisoned without pain relief to examine the effectiveness of new treatment, which are all considered as heartless behaviors of humankind. According to individuals supporting animal-right, therefore, animal testing somehow refers to a negative connotation. They suggest a wide variety of other feasible alternatives such as computer models, isolated tissues or even medical personnel that can conceivably provide reliable answers researchers need. Moreover, some people attribute animal experimentation to the dwindling number of wildlife species. Constantly killing lab animals which are fitted with little or no protection from cruelty partly narrows down the animal population, even more disturbingly, leading some species to the verge of extinction.
However , there is a substantial proportion of advocates for animal testing on laboratory .In today’s contemporary society, admittedly , lab animals play a crucial role in forming a well-secured life for human being in the near future. For example,
.when scientists successfully develop new cures or drugs for diseases destined to be incurable. , lab animals, surely, will be pioneering applications to guarantee the safety and danger level of these medical therapies before clinical trials on patients can take place. Because humankind and animals have quite similar organ systems, conducting experiment on such complete living organism is highly likely to produce more trustworthy results than using other computer samples . Therefore, from animal testing, scientists can discover the reaction of our immune system to these therapeutic techniques, and afterwards, the treatments will be adjusted appropriately to human body.
In conclusion , from my own perspective , I firmly believe that although the life of lab animals is extremely regrettable , experimentation on guinea pigs should be carried out since the survival of human being is of more importance that the existence of such animals . However, there should be a set of strict principles to minimize the sheer pains lab animals are being exposed to.
